A Buffer alternative that is not billed per channel
19 October 2026. 5 min read.
Buffer is a good scheduler and a cheap one to start with. The reason people go looking for a Buffer alternative is usually the second thing that happens: the bill is per channel, so every account you connect raises it, and the inbox it gives you is for public comments rather than the DMs where most enquiries actually arrive. Ignis charges one price per client workspace however many accounts sit inside it, and puts WhatsApp in the inbox next to Instagram DMs. Here is the comparison, including the places Buffer wins.
What Buffer charges, read at source
From Buffer’s pricing page, read in a browser on 2026-10-20:
- Free: 3 channels, 1 user.
- Essentials: $5 a month per channel, or $60 billed yearly, 1 user.
- Team: $10 a month per channel, or $120 billed yearly, unlimited users, and this is the only tier with approval workflows.
The thing to hold onto is the unit: a channel, not a client and not a person. Buffer’s own pricing page does the multiplication for you as you move its channel selector: at seven channels the Team card reads $70 a month, billed yearly at $840. That is about AED 257 a month before you have added a second client. The social media tax calculator plots that curve against five other tools: move the slider to your channel count and the per-channel models separate from the flat ones quickly.
Three capability facts from the same page. Buffer has a community inbox, so public comments are covered. Content approval workflows are on Team and only Team. And its channel list runs to LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, YouTube, X, Google Business Profile, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Mastodon: WhatsApp is not on it.
The unit of billing is the whole difference
Ignis Growth is AED 49 a month for one client workspace: ten seats, unlimited posts, and all six platforms connected. Connecting the sixth account does not change the price, because the price is attached to the client workspace rather than to the accounts inside it.
For several clients, Agency is AED 49 for the first client workspace with ten members, then AED 29 for each additional one. Five client workspaces are AED 165 a month, ten are AED 310. Annual is ten times monthly, so two months are free. The white-label client approval portal is included on Growth and Agency, where Buffer’s approval workflows need the Team tier and therefore the $10 per channel rate.
That comparison flips if you are one person with two accounts. Buffer Essentials at $5 a channel is genuinely cheap for a single creator running Instagram and TikTok, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Per-channel pricing only turns expensive once the channel count grows, which is what happens when you take on clients.
A comments inbox is not a DM inbox
This is the functional gap rather than the pricing one. Buffer’s inbox handles the public side: comments arriving under posts. Ignis carries Instagram DMs, Messenger and WhatsApp as conversations, with comments and mentions from Facebook, Instagram and YouTube in the same per-client list, and shows how long is left on a reply window while you are reading the message.
WhatsApp matters here out of proportion to its place on a feature list, because in the Gulf it is where a customer messages a business. A number connects self-serve, the same as any other platform, and carries real two-way messaging and message templates. One bound worth stating: our production proof is a connection made through that flow, so read it as working rather than as guaranteed for every business on day one. WhatsApp also has no feed, so there is nothing to schedule to it. Ignis connects to six platforms and publishes to five, and those are two different numbers on purpose.
Where Buffer covers more than Ignis
Ignis publishes to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube. It does not publish to X, Pinterest or Snapchat, and Buffer does carry channels Ignis has no plans against. If a client’s plan includes any of those three, Ignis cannot be your only tool.
LinkedIn comments and mentions do not reach the Ignis inbox. Connecting and publishing to LinkedIn both work, but the comments do not come back, because LinkedIn’s Community Management API withholds its notification product at the access tier Ignis holds.
Threads is unavailable to anyone through Ignis right now: Meta has the app in development mode with its permissions rejected and a resubmission pending.
There is a browser image editor and a multi-track video editor, with export sized for each platform.
Who should switch, and who should not
Switch if your channel count is climbing, if you need client approvals without moving up a tier to get them, or if the enquiries you care about arrive as DMs and WhatsApp messages rather than as comments. Stay on Buffer if you run a small number of channels on your own, or if you publish to X or Pinterest. A cheaper price on a tool that does not reach your platform is not cheaper.
Questions people ask
Is there a free Buffer alternative?
Ignis Basic is free: one seat, one client workspace, three connected accounts and 30 posts a month across three platforms. Its inbox is readable but you cannot reply from it, and automations and the client portal are not included. Buffer’s own free plan gives 3 channels and 1 user.
Does Buffer support WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp is not among the channels listed on Buffer’s pricing page, checked 2026-10-20. Ignis connects a WhatsApp number self-serve and carries it in the same inbox as Instagram DMs and Messenger.
How much is a Buffer alternative for six accounts?
On Buffer Team that is $10 per channel, so $60 a month, roughly AED 220, and the same page shows $70 at seven channels. On Ignis Growth it is AED 49 a month whatever the account count, because the price follows the client workspace rather than the channels.
Does Ignis have approval workflows like Buffer Team?
Yes, as a white-label portal the client opens rather than an approval step inside the tool, and it is included on Growth and Agency rather than being the reason to upgrade.
Can I schedule to X or Twitter with Ignis?
No. Ignis publishes to five platforms and X is not one of them, nor are Pinterest and Snapchat.
