Instagram cut its hashtag limit from 30 to 5 tags per post or reel, effective 18 December 2025. The cap applies to captions and first comments combined, and a photo or video comment carrying more than 5 tags simply won’t post. If you run Instagram for clients and your caption templates are built around 20 or 30 hashtags, the Instagram hashtag limit 2026 breaks them today, not next quarter.
The Instagram hashtag limit 2026: what changed on 18 December 2025
Instagram’s official account, @creators, posted on Threads: “Starting today, Instagram will allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post.” Social Media Today covered the same date and quoted Instagram’s own reasoning directly: “We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram.”
Instagram head Adam Mosseri put the same point in his own words, saying a few specific tags perform better than a long generic list, as reported by Ground News. Social Media Today’s report also notes that Meta’s other app, Threads, already limits tags to one per post, a pattern the company appears to be extending across its platforms. Digital Trends reported, citing Social Media Today, that Instagram had tested a stricter 3-tag cap before settling on 5 as the wider rollout figure.
Why the Help Centre and the developer reference disagree
Instagram’s Help Centre page on hashtags now reads: “You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won’t post.” That is the operative rule for anyone posting through the app or through a scheduler today.
Oddly, a differently cached crawl of the same Help Centre URL still shows the old wording, “You can use up to 30 tags on a post,” which means the page content has been inconsistent since the rollout. Meta’s Graph API media reference, checked on 2026-09-04, still documents the legacy limits: captions cap at 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags. The consumer app enforces 5. The developer documentation still says 30. Anyone posting through the API or a tool built on it should test against the live 5-tag behaviour rather than trust the written reference.
Worth keeping separate: Instagram’s hashtag search API caps unique hashtag lookups at 30 per rolling 7-day period. That is a search limit for developers pulling hashtag data, not a posting limit, and it hasn’t changed.
What happens if a caption or comment carries more than 5 tags
Scheduling tools have started to enforce the new rule at the point of publishing rather than at publish time on Instagram: a caption or first comment with more than 5 hashtags is held back until it is trimmed. Ignis checks the count as you write, the same way it checks a Threads post against 500 characters.
For a caption, that means a post with 20 tags either won’t go out at all through a compliant scheduler, or it will publish with only the tags Instagram accepts and drop the rest silently, depending on how the tool handles it. For a comment posted separately, Instagram’s own Help Centre is explicit: the comment itself won’t post if it carries more than 5 tags on that photo or video.
Hashtags in the first comment don’t add extra slots
The old workaround of putting all your hashtags in the first comment, to keep the caption clean, doesn’t create a second bucket of 5. According to hashtag guidance covering the 2026 change, the 5-tag limit applies regardless of whether tags sit in your caption or in a comment. Caption and comment share one limit, not two.
That kills a common agency habit: writing a caption with zero tags and dropping 20 to 30 into the first comment for reach. Under the current rule, the comment carrying more than 5 tags won’t post, and the caption above it is left with no hashtags at all.
A five-step audit of your queue
If you manage more than one Instagram account, don’t wait for a failed publish to find this. Run this against every client this week.
- Pull every post and reel scheduled for the next 30 days, across every client.
- Count hashtags in the caption and the planned first comment together, as one total, not two.
- Cut anything over 5, keeping the tags most specific to that post rather than the ones you always use.
- Rebuild your caption template so it defaults to 5 slots, not 20 or 30.
- Send the revised captions back through client approval before anything goes live.
If you’re juggling this across several client accounts, the workflow matters as much as the count. See managing social media for multiple clients for how to keep each client’s captions, tags and approvals separate without losing track of which template belongs to whom.
Arabic hashtags and multi-word tags
The 5-tag limit applies regardless of language or script. Instagram’s Help Centre confirms hashtags can’t include spaces or special characters, meaning a multi-word Arabic phrase has to be joined without spaces to count as a single tag, the same as English. A phrase that would naturally have three words in Arabic still only occupies one of your 5 slots once it’s written as one unbroken tag, but three separate Arabic words written as three separate tags use three of your 5.
If you post bilingual captions, that arithmetic gets tight fast. Five tags total across two languages usually means two or three per language, not five each.
Ignis schedules posts in each client’s timezone and keeps every caption, comment plan and approval in one place, so when a platform rule like this changes, you’re checking one queue rather than five spreadsheets. For the other platform-specific limits worth knowing before you next schedule a batch, see image and video sizes for eight social platforms in 2026.
Questions people ask
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?
Five, total, across the caption and the first comment combined. Instagram’s Help Centre states you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and a comment with more than 5 tags on a single photo or video won’t post.
Does putting hashtags in the first comment give you extra tags beyond 5?
No. The 5-tag limit applies whether the tags sit in your caption or in a comment underneath it, so splitting them across both doesn’t create additional slots.
Why does Meta’s Graph API documentation still say 30 hashtags?
Meta’s developer reference for the Instagram Graph API media endpoint had not been updated to match the new consumer app limit as of the most recent check. The written documentation and the live posting behaviour currently disagree, so test against what actually publishes rather than the reference page.
What happens if I schedule a post with 20 hashtags in the caption?
Depending on the scheduler, the post either fails to publish or publishes with the extra tags dropped. If the tags are in a separate first comment, that comment won’t post at all once it exceeds 5 tags on that photo or video.
Can Arabic hashtags still be used under the new limit?
Yes, the 5-tag cap applies to any language. Hashtags can’t contain spaces, so a multi-word Arabic phrase needs to be written as one unbroken tag to count as a single one of your 5.
